What Is TOPCon — Simply Explained
A solar cell converts light into electricity through a silicon wafer. The biggest efficiency limiter in conventional cells is “recombination” — where electrons generated by sunlight escape back into the silicon before reaching the electrical contacts, wasting energy as heat instead of useful electricity.
TOPCon addresses this with a breakthrough at the rear of the cell: an ultra-thin tunnel oxide layer (1–2 nanometers thick — about 500 times thinner than a human hair) topped with a heavily doped polysilicon layer. This “passivated contact” blocks recombination dramatically at the rear surface — the main recombination site — allowing far more electrons to reach the contacts and contribute to electrical output.
The result: higher efficiency, lower temperature losses, and a more stable output over the panel’s lifetime.
