Already have a solar system and want to expand it? Whether your bill has increased, you’ve added ACs, or you simply want more generation, adding panels to an existing system is possible — but the right approach depends on your inverter type and how it was originally sized.

Step 1 — Check Your Inverter’s Maximum PV Input

Every inverter has a maximum DC input rating. This is the most important number for expansion. Example: A Growatt MIN 5000TL-XH has a max PV input of 6,500W. If your current system has 5,000W of panels, you can add up to 1,500W more on the same inverter.

Step 2 — Check MPPT String Voltage and Current Limits

Each MPPT tracker on your inverter can handle a maximum string voltage (e.g., 500V DC) and current (e.g., 12A). When adding panels, the new panels must either fit within an existing string’s limits or connect to a second MPPT input. Exceeding the MPPT voltage limit damages the inverter.

Step 3 — Check Net Metering Agreement

Your NEPRA net metering approval specifies a maximum system capacity (e.g., 5kW). Adding panels beyond this limit without updating your net metering application is a violation. Always inform your DISCO (LESCO, MEPCO, etc.) before expanding — they will update your net metering certificate.

Mixing PERC and TOPCon panels in the same string causes mismatch losses and can reduce overall output significantly. If your existing panels are PERC and you want TOPCon, connect them on separate MPPT inputs or replace all panels.

Can I add panels with a different brand than my existing ones?
Yes, as long as the electrical specifications (Voc, Isc, Vmp, Imp) are compatible for the string. Brand doesn’t matter — voltage and current do. Always have a qualified installer verify string compatibility before connecting new panels.
Do I need a new net metering application if I add panels?
Yes. If you’re increasing your system’s total capacity, you must apply to update your net metering registration with your DISCO. Your installer can help with the updated application — the process is straightforward and usually takes 4–8 weeks.
