Can I Add More Solar Panels to My Existing System in Pakistan?

Can You Expand Any Solar System?

Step 1 — Check Your Inverter’s Maximum PV Input
Every inverter has a maximum DC input rating. This is the most important number for expansion. Example: A Growatt MIN 5000TL-XH has a max PV input of 6,500W. If your current system has 5,000W of panels, you can add up to 1,500W more on the same inverter.

Step 2 — Check MPPT String Voltage and Current Limits
Each MPPT tracker on your inverter can handle a maximum string voltage (e.g., 500V DC) and current (e.g., 12A). When adding panels, the new panels must either fit within an existing string’s limits or connect to a second MPPT input. Exceeding the MPPT voltage limit damages the inverter.
Step 3 — Check Net Metering Agreement
Your NEPRA net metering approval specifies a maximum system capacity (e.g., 5kW). Adding panels beyond this limit without updating your net metering application is a violation. Always inform your DISCO (LESCO, MEPCO, etc.) before expanding — they will update your net metering certificate.

Mixing PERC and TOPCon panels in the same string causes mismatch losses and can reduce overall output significantly. If your existing panels are PERC and you want TOPCon, connect them on separate MPPT inputs or replace all panels.
When You Need a New Inverter
- Your existing inverter’s PV input is already at maximum — no headroom for more panels
- You want to more than double your system size
- Your existing inverter is old and inefficient — might as well upgrade
- You want to add battery to an on-grid-only system (need hybrid inverter)
